Middle School: English Language Arts
Listed below are the standards/guidelines for the particular areas of the St. John Middle School English Language Arts (ELA) program.
Reading
Text: Language of Literature (McDougal Littell)
- The students will read and comprehend complex literary and informational texts noting key ideas and details.
- The students will integrate knowledge and ideas to make inferences, site evidence, determine themes, and analyze individual events and ideas.
- The students will interpret and analyze words or phrases, structure of texts, and assess points of view.
Writing
Text: Language of Literature (McDougal Littell)
- Write arguments to support claims.
- Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic.
- Write narratives.
The students will be writing routinely over extended time frames and shorter time frames.
Using technology and the internet, they will produce and publish writing and link to and cite sources as well as to interact and collaborate with others.
Speaking/Listening
- The students will prepare for and participate in conversations and collaborations, building ideas and expressing them clearly, and evaluating information presented in diverse media.
- The students will present information using digital media and displays of data.
- The students will also adapt speech to a variety of contexts and tasks.
Grammar
- The students will demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar when writing, speaking, reading, or listening.
- The students will determine meaning of unknown and multiple meaning words.
- The students will understand figurative language, word relationships, and nuances in word meanings.
- The students will acquire general academic and domain-specific words and phrases.
