Seventy years ago, a dream became reality.
On September 6, 1956, St. John School opened its doors as the first Catholic school in Lawrence, Kansas, welcoming students in grades 1–8.
But the story of St. John School began long before that first day.
For 10 years, Rt. Rev. Msgr. George Towle and a dedicated committee of St. John parishioners worked to make Catholic education in Lawrence a reality. Through their vision, perseverance, faith and generosity, the school they had worked toward for a decade finally welcomed its first students.
Under the leadership of Principal Sister Owen Marie Falk, SCL, and staffed by the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth, St. John began a tradition of Catholic education that has now continued for seven decades.
Today, 70 years after those first students entered their classrooms, their legacy lives on in every St. John Eagle.
