Ministry Involvement

I serve as a Lector, usually at the 7am Sunday mass. I have been involved with Faith Formation, specifically with RCIA, this past year. I have been involved with the Sanctuary Ministry, and represent St Johns with the Interfaith Mental Health Organization along with Susan Tabor. I have been a member of the Knights of Columbus in Ministry Involvement Participación del Ministerio Lawrence since the early 1990s.

What I love about St. John:
Several things, not in any particular order. I am so incredibly grateful for the opportunity to engage in the sacramental life of the Church through St Johns. This is a very prayerful community, with many holy persons working on becoming even more so. I love the diversity represented in the St John’s community. All of Lawrence seems to be represented in this community, and that is awesome. There is a very active faith community, with persons interested in making that community and the broader world be more reflective of the lives to which we are called by Christ.

Give an example in your life when you demonstrated how you approached a situation with an open mind and helped lead it to a resolution:

Because of my leadership position at my place of employment, and the work I do with communities more broadly, I have a lot of examples, but will share one that happened recently. I received a call from a close friend who was in a fairly heated conflict with some members of her local church. Based on what I heard from her, she appeared to be right, but that was not resolving the conflict. I asked her to do several things and then report back to me what she learned. I asked her to talk with one of the other persons to learn more about her background and perspective to see if she could learn about the conflict from that other persons perspective. I also asked her to pray for guidance about it, and to see if others in the broader circle had advice. It appears that this was enough to diffuse the conflict, and get both parties working on a resolution from a much less conflictual position. Both learned of valid perspectives that could help, and while they still are not close friends, they found common ground in working together on improving an important situation in their parish.

Varias cosas, sin ningún orden en particular. Estoy increíblemente agradecido por la oportunidad de participar en la vida sacramental de la Iglesia a través de St John’s. Esta es una comunidad muy orante, con muchas personas santas que trabajan para ser aún más. Me encanta la diversidad representada en la comunidad de St John. Todo Lawrence parece estar representada en esta comunidad, y eso es asombroso. Hay una comunidad de fe muy activa, con personas interesadas en hacer que esa comunidad y el mundo en general reflejen más las vidas a las que Cristo nos llama.

Debido a mi posición de liderazgo en mi lugar de trabajo y el trabajo que hago con las comunidades en general, tengo muchos ejemplos, pero compartiré uno que sucedió recientemente. Recibí una llamada de una amiga cercana que estaba en un conflicto bastante acalorado con algunos miembros de su iglesia local. Según lo que escuché de ella, parecía tener razón, pero eso no resolvía el conflicto. Le pedí que hiciera varias cosas y luego me informara lo que aprendió. Le pedí que hablara con una de las otras personas para aprender más sobre sus antecedentes y perspectiva para ver si podía aprender sobre el conflicto desde la perspectiva de esa otra persona. También le pedí que orara por orientación al respecto y que viera si otros en el círculo más amplio tenían algún consejo. Parece que esto fue suficiente para diluir el conflicto y hacer que ambas partes trabajaran en una resolución desde una posición mucho menos conflictiva. Ambos se enteraron de perspectivas válidas que podrían ayudar, y aunque todavía no son amigos cercanos, encontraron puntos en común al trabajar juntos para mejorar una situación importante en su parroquia.

I love the people of the Parish! Sharing my Faith Walk with such Amazing Catholics has changed my life!

Give an example in your life when you demonstrated how you approached a situation with an open mind and helped lead it to a resolution:

My job helping clients purchase a home has given me countless opportunities to always have an open mind and find creative ways to resolve issues.

In my journey specifically at St John's, I lead an incredible team of parishioners that volunteered to be delegates to the Enflame Our Hearts Convocation in the fall of 2019. That team consisted of 17 very intelligent, faith filled powerful Catholics with beautiful ideas and so much passion for Missionary Discipleship. Leading this group through 6 months of formation was a wild, beautiful experience and often included intense bumpy terrain as we worked together to represent our Parish at the Convocation. With an open mind, tons of prayer and guidance from the Holy Spirit, our team showed up and represented our Parish in a very powerful way!

¡Me encanta la gente de la Parroquia! ¡Compartir mi caminata de fe con católicos tan increíbles ha cambiado mi vida!

Da un ejemplo en tu vida cuando demostraste afrontar una situación con una mente abierta y ayudaste:

En mi trabajo ayudando a clientes a comprar una casa me ha brindado innumerables oportunidades para tener siempre una mente abierta y encontrar formas creativas de resolver problemas.

En mi viaje específicamente en St John’s, lideré un equipo increíble de feligreses que se ofrecieron como voluntarios para ser delegados de la Convocatoria Enflame Our Hearts en el otoño de 2019. Ese equipo estaba formado por 17 católicos muy inteligentes, llenos de fe, poderosos, con hermosas ideas y mucha pasión por el discipulado misionero. Liderar a este grupo a través de 6 meses de Formación fue una experiencia salvaje y hermosa y, a menudo, incluyó un camino con muchos baches mientras trabajábamos juntos para representar a nuestra Parroquia en la Convocatoria. ¡Con una mente abierta, toneladas de oración y la guía del Espíritu Santo, nuestro equipo apareció y representó a nuestra parroquia de una manera muy poderosa!

Ministry Involvement

I serve as a lector for the 1 p.m. Mass. I also attend the Monday evening prayer group and Bible study with Maria Mota.

What I love about St. John:
I love everything, including going to Mass and serving as a lector, just everything about the church. I want to continue to serve and hopefully being able to come onto the council will allow me to do that.

Give an example in your life when you demonstrated how you approached a situation with an open mind and helped lead it to a resolution:

I have come back at church after a number of years. I had been looking for something, and I lost my way in my mind. I thought I was the best person to be in control of my life and wanted to do things myself. I did get into trouble. That led me back to having a life of prayer. I talked to God, and I could that God was guiding me. I decided I am not horrible person myself, which I had been feeling. I remember saying if you help me get out of these troubles, I will help serve you in the church. He helped me get back. I am on this journey today.

I give everything back to the church, I do whatever God wants to do. I I want to help the church, whatever it needs, I would like to try to help. I don’t want to lose that feeling, and I want to fulfill that promise to God. I want to keep moving forward and try to do my best.

¿Qué es lo que más te gusta de St. John’s?

Me encanta todo, incluso ir a misa y servir como lector, todo lo relacionado con la iglesia. Quiero seguir sirviendo y, con suerte, poder ingresar al consejo.

Da un ejemplo en tu vida cuando demostraste afrontar una situación con una mente abierta y ayudaste:

Regrese a la Iglesia después de varios años. Estaba en busca de algo, y me perdí en mi mente. Pensé que yo era la mejor persona para tener el control de mi vida y quería hacer las cosas por mí mismo. Me metí en problemas. Eso me llevó de nuevo a tener una vida de oración. Hablé con Dios, y me dejé guiar por Él. Decidí y entendí que no soy una persona horrible, cual era lo que había estado sintiendo. Recuerdo haber dicho que, si me ayudas a salir de estos problemas, te ayudaré a servirte en la Iglesia. Me ayudó a volver. Hoy me encuentro en este viaje.

Le devuelvo todo a la Iglesia, hago la voluntad de Dios. Yo quiero ayudar a la Iglesia en lo que necesite, me gustaría tratar de ayudar. No quiero perder ese sentimiento, y quiero cumplir esa promesa a Dios. Quiero seguir avanzando e intentar dar lo mejor de mí.

Ministry Involvement

I enjoy singing as a cantor at Mass as well as preparing the sanctuary by decorating for the liturgical seasons with the Arts and Environment ministry. My husband Don and I are mentors to the engaged and lead marriage retreat weekends with EverMore In Love.

What I love about St. John:
The community. When we came to St John’s we had tried several other parishes and this was the only place that felt like home. We love raising our kids here where everyone looks out for each other.

Give an example in your life when you demonstrated how you approached a situation with an open mind and helped lead it to a resolution:

Everyday of married life with children is a lesson in being open minded. I have learned to listen to understand instead of listening to react. In a recent incident with one of our children, I had to listen and ask many questions before we responded as parents. It helped to remember that my concern came from my deep love and that I wanted to be sure my love was communicated before my reaction to the situation. So listen to understand and lead with love, always.

¿Qué es lo que más te gusta de St. John’s?

La comunidad. Cuando llegamos a St John’s, habíamos probado en otras parroquias y este era el único lugar en el que nos sentíamos como en casa. Nos encanta criar a nuestros hijos aquí, donde todos se cuidan unos a otros.

Da un ejemplo en tu vida cuando demostraste afrontar una situación con una mente abierta y ayudaste:

Todos los días de la vida matrimonial con hijos es una lección de apertura mental. He aprendido a escuchar para comprender en lugar de escuchar para reaccionar. En un incidente reciente con uno de nuestros hijos, tuve que escuchar y hacer muchas preguntas antes de que respondiéramos como padres. Me ayudó recordar que mi preocupación provenía de mi profundo amor y que quería asegurarme de que mi amor fuera comunicado antes de mi reacción a la situación. Así que escucha para entender y liderar con amor, siempre.
